Ci giungono ormai sempre più frequentemente attraverso la stampa e i concerti boicottati segnali scoraggianti sul mondo della musica reggae. Il reggae è una musica che affonda le sue radici nei valori della fratellanza, del rispetto, della battaglia per i diritti umani.

Noi di SOS Jamaica siamo innanzitutto amanti del reggae e della sua terra, non ci stancheremo mai di precisarlo, ed è questo che ci spinge a cercare di dare il nostro piccolo contributo per affrontare una realtà quotidiana sempre più preoccupante. La nostra missione è quella di affrontare senza preclusioni la realtà dei fatti mostrando le 2 facce che la compongono, sempre. Così come la Jamaica non è solo palme, spiagge, sole ed altre belle cose, il reggae non è solo i testi violenti e razzisti che i media o realtà esterne al mondo del reggae in questo momento vorrebbero far sembrare. Oggi fa molto più scalpore parlare di reggae come di una musica che promuove violenza piuttosto che parlare della realtà dove questa nasce e che la caratterizza come la musica dei sufferah, del ghetto people, dei diseredati e dimenticati… si il reggae è anche questo….
La campagna Don’t Promote Murder Music nasce come stimolo per la reggae comunity ad assumere una posizione decisa e matura contro il problema delle liriche omofobiche, violente ed offensive. Noi in quanto amanti della musica reggae siamo fieri di questa nostra passione e vogliamo prendere netta distanza da chi, attraverso testi e contenuti più che discutibili, vuole fare di essa un mezzo di discriminazione, odio e violenza. Gridiamo quindi il nostro NO a tutti quegli artisti che strumentalizzano il reggae per questi loschi fini e gridiamo il nostro NO anche a chi, allo scopo di farsi propaganda, usa questo tema senza avere cognizione alcuna e rispetto del contesto socioculturale dove questa musica nasce e cresce.
Don’t Promote Murder Music non vuole dire censurare perché non crediamo in questa pratica antidemocratica e controproducente, vuole semplicemente esortare a promuovere la parte sana di questa musica. Il motto della campagna lo dice chiaro ‘Non promuovere musica assassina – promuovi roots rock reggae’. Per Roots Rock Reggae ci riferiamo al reggae vero, genuino, in tutte le sue evoluzioni dal roots al dancehall passando per tutte le sue molteplici varianti. Non vogliamo quindi di certo giustificare chi canta di uccidere un gay ma non vogliamo neanche ritrovarci nel ruolo di censori per imporre una ennesima visione di ‘democrazia’ (i fatti quotidiani dimostrano i nefasti risultati di questa pratica…), vogliamo solo capire e per quello che possiamo, aiutare a capire, poiché questa è l’unica visione possibile in una società multietnica ed interculturale. L’obiettivo della campagna Don’t Promote Murder Music è invitare il popolo del reggae a sostenere questa visione promuovendola in ogni contesto musicale.

Per sostenere questa campagna con un gesto concreto ti chiediamo di diffondere questo messaggio, di esporre il suo logo distintivo, distribuendo il materiale informativo e sostenendo SOS Jamaica nei suoi obiettivi sembra poco ma per noi è vitale…
